Milestone 13.J

Expand research on the care workforce and supply of skilled labor. Identify the barriers to entry, challenges of retention, and causes and effects of turnover.

Success Criteria

  • Quantify economic impact on PWD and their families, and on health systems, attributable to current and projected future dementia and aging workforce limitations. Identify features of effective programs for workforce management and enhancement.

  • Develop strategies to support existing caregivers in the workforce to address issues such as skills training and precarious employment.

Summary of Key Accomplishments

NIA held two scientific workshops in May 2019 – Expert Meeting on the Demography of the Older Residential Care Population and Gaps in the Dementia Care Workforce –to explore the state of the science and research gaps related to demographic trends of the PLWD population and the implications for a future dementia care workforce. NIA published a notice of special interest and a call for applications for a network to develop innovative research that identifies the characteristics that the dementia care workforce will need as the population of PLWD grows. The Centers on the Demography and Economics of AD/ADRD include a focus on quantifying the economic impact on PLWD, their caregivers, and health systems.
