Staff Scientist - Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Staff Scientist 1 in the Health Disparities Research Section (HDRS) of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences in Baltimore, MD. The overall research goal of the HDRS is to conduct interdisciplinary research focused on examining health disparities among minorities and the poor and to investigate the underlying behavioral and biological factors that drive the development of health disparities. Our study, Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) provides a cohort for these bio-behavioral investigations.

Ideally, the incumbent will have expertise in behavioral science with specialized experience in cognition, socio-demographic factors associated with cognitive functioning within the context of aging and health disparities. The incumbent will also assist in translational studies that examine biologic transduction pathways through which social determinates of health result in impaired cognitive function, health, and well-being.

Relevant research experience and peer-reviewed publications in the topic of cognition, behavior, social determinates of health and aging are a plus. Excellent written and oral (English) communication skills are also required. In addition, incumbent should have demonstrated knowledge and experience in multivariable and longitudinal statistical approaches to epidemiologic data, and fluency with programs for analyzing data such as R. The incumbent will have a major role in assisting the Principal Investigator in project management, manuscript preparation, experimental design, training of junior fellows, providing technical assistance, and maintaining research continuity within HDRS. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to support the work of the Laboratory and the Principal Investigator.

The successful individual must have a PhD degree in neuropsychology, psychology, social epidemiology, or similar fields. Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
