IRP Core: Gene Expression and Genomics Unit

The Gene Expression and Genomics Unit (GEGU), led by Kevin G. Becker, is a core facility for all researchers of the NIA IRP. The core facility uses and analyzes gene expression microarrays as well as Next-Generation DNA and RNA sequencing to neet the needs of each Principal Investigator. Illumina and Agilent gene expression arrays are used in small- and large-scale projects to study transcript expression patterns in different species, including Human, Mouse, Rat, Drosophila, and C. elegans. The core provides advice on experimental design, sample preparation, quality control of RNA or DNA samples, sample processing, and data extraction. Next-Generation sequencing is performed using the Illumina HiSeq 2500 and ION Torrent Proton DNA sequencing systems. In consultation and close collaboration with the lead investigator, the core assists with sample and library preparation, quality control, and analytical services that support experimental techniques such as ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, CLIP-Seq, Ampli-Seq, and 5-C. Additionally, the core assists with the analysis, mining, visualization, interpretation, and archival of large-scale datasets from array and sequencing projects.
