Biography
Dr. Ajoy Karikkineth is a Board-Certified Internist. His interest in cardiovascular research and aging led him to being part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) staff. His early work related to investigating the longitudinal progression of intimal medial wall thickness and factors affecting it. Subsequently, his research interests have expanded to the associations between cardiovascular disease and mobility.
Research Interests/Portfolio
Dr. Karikkineth’s research focuses on the association of cardiovascular risk factors with mobility and physical performance. The impact of cardiovascular disease on physical performance is important because physical performance is an indicator of physiologic reserve, and impairment of physical performance is associated with greater morbidity, worse prognosis in many clinical conditions, and increased mortality. Examples of specific topics that Dr. Karikkineth is presently studying are the association of pulse wave velocity and pulse pressure with gait variability, and the impact of high pulse wave velocity and ankle-brachial index on spatiotemporal variables of gait cycle. His work also includes exploring the different mechanisms for these associations, including the role of cognition, changes in muscle, and peripheral nerve damage.
