Seminar on Expectations in Aging: Impacts on Health, Cognition, and Well-Being
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Social Sciences (BBCSS) jointly hosted a hybrid seminar titled Expectations in Aging: Impacts on Health, Cognition, and Well-Being on May 31, 2023. Meeting participants discussed several approaches to addressing negative expectations on aging as one pathway to improving health outcomes in individuals and communities. Five presentations explored various research methodologies and study designs involving negative expectations of aging, including the differences between studying individuals and groups, the influence of stereotypes, the role of education in changing behavior, how individuals recover from stressful life events, and age discrimination in the workplace.
