Leveraging Insights and Approaches from Social and Affective Neuroscience to Promote Adaptive Aging

On November 18-19, 2019, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging (NIA), convened a workshop to identify gaps (1) in the understanding of age-related changes in social and emotional processes and (2) opportunities to leverage insights from the fields of social and affective science to support research on intervention development to promote healthy aging. The meeting was comprised of background on basic issues in the social and affective neuroscience of aging, executive function and affect, effects of social and prosocial behavior on the brain, and socioemotional malleability and resilience, followed by facilitated discussions to identify gaps in existing research and new avenues for aging research. A meeting summary (PDF, 473K) is available.
