Expert Meeting on the Demography of the Older Residential Care Population: Research Questions and Data Gaps
BSR commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) and Committee on Population (CPOP) to convene an expert meeting on May 8, 2019, in Washington, D.C., to further explore research gaps and data needs related to the demography of the older residential care population. Conveners agreed that a better understanding of the demography of the older residential care population is needed given the aging of the U.S. population, impending changes in family structure, and projected caregiving workforce shortages. BSR expends substantial resources on data collection efforts that cover this population. Yet, there are gaps in knowledge about the size and characteristics (including family context) of the residential care population, now and in the future, and how well needs, including care for older adults with dementia, are being met in these settings.
