The Arts and Aging: Building the Science
As part of a Federal Interagency Task Force on the Arts and Human Development, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and three units within the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)—commissioned the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to convene a workshop aimed at exploring ways to strengthen research on the relationship of the arts and aging. The workshop, held on September 14, 2012, focused on such topics as participatory arts for older adults; music, hearing, and memory; addressing cognitive decline and dementia with the arts; aesthetics and design in group living arrangements; and research gaps and opportunities.
