Advancing Behavioral and Social Research on the Elderly in Disasters
This expert meeting was convened by the National Academies of Science, Committee on Population, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, and was chaired by Duncan Thomas of Duke University. The goal of the meeting was to foster better communication between researchers in the aging and disaster planning fields and to solicit suggestions for future research priorities in this area. Invited experts (in the fields of psychology, sociology, demography, simulation modeling, public policy, epidemiology and public health, and geriatrics) considered how the social and behavioral sciences might contribute research on the elderly in disasters, with particular emphases on settings and institutions, data challenges, and modeling.
