Don't wait! Apply for the Butler-Williams Scholars program today
Are you a post-doc looking for training in aging research? Are you an established researcher who’s new to the area of aging research? Are you junior faculty interested in expanding your career options?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you should apply for the 2017 NIA Butler-Williams Scholars Program. This year’s week-long program will take place from July 31 through August 4 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The B-W Scholars Program is sponsored by NIA with support from the Wake Forest University Health System, the John A. Hartford Foundation, and the Alzheimer's Association. The deadline for applications is March 24, 2017.
What happens at the B-W Scholars Program?
The 2017 Butler-Williams Scholars Program includes lectures, seminars, and small group discussions in research design, including issues relevant to aging of ethnic and racial minorities. It also creates networks of graduates who share information about emerging research trends, funding opportunities, and important conferences and meetings. This ongoing network is a peer and career connection that alumni value well after they have moved beyond the summer session.
Lectures feature NIA scientific staff and senior grantee researchers who cover topics in research on aging, including:
- the biology of aging
- genetics and Alzheimer’s disease
- social factors, health behaviors, and aging
- interdisciplinary health disparities research related to aging
Speakers confirmed at this time include:
- Dr. Rick Morimoto, Northwestern University,
- Dr. Cynthia Boyd, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine,
- Dr. Kimberly S. Johnson, Duke University,
- Dr. Spero Manson, University of Colorado School of Public Health, and
- Dr. José A. Luchsinger, Columbia University Medical Center
In the discussion sessions, you can focus on methodological approaches and interventions. You can also consult with NIA staff on the developing your particular research interests and get advice on preparing and submitting research grant applications to NIA.
Who should apply?
NIA is accepting applications now from emerging researchers, including those who may have had limited previous involvement in research on aging. You must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or lawfully admitted for permanent residence. The B-W Scholars Program is a program of the NIA Office of Special Populations, so we are particularly interested in getting the word out to researchers with an interest in health disparities research related to aging to apply. Applicants from diverse backgrounds, including individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities and women are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.
