Video Featuring African American Caregiver of a Spouse with Early Alzheimer’s Disease
This 3-minute video features Dan Gasby, co-author with B. (Barbara) Smith of the book, Before I Forget: Love, Hope, Help, and Acceptance in Our Fight Against Alzheimer's. Smith is Gasby's wife and had a successful career as a model, actress, and restaurateur before being diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. After her diagnosis, the couple chose to advocate for greater public awareness of the disease and for participation in Alzheimer’s clinical trials.
In the video, Gasby notes that the disease disproportionately affects women and people of color and can be particularly devastating for people of low and moderate incomes. He also reflects on the caregiving experience.
