At today’s meeting of the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services, NIA Director Richard J. Hodes presented the NIH FY 2021 Professional Judgment Budget for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. Titled Together We Succeed: Accelerating Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias, the report provides an estimate of the funds needed to fully pursue scientific opportunities to treat and prevent these devastating diseases. The report also details the significant progress researchers have made on several fronts—from novel and better biomarkers and new understanding of underlying disease mechanisms to identifying new drug targets and creating new research centers to focus on dementia care and caregiving. In conjunction with the release of the budget and progress report, NIH has updated its AD+ADRD Research Implementation Milestones database to showcase funding initiatives, accomplishments, and highlights of progress toward accomplishing the National Alzheimer’s Plan goal of effectively treating or preventing Alzheimer’s and related dementias by 2025.
