Curious about the latest in cutting-edge geriatrics research and care, plus related grant opportunities? Plan to join NIA at the American Geriatrics Society’s (AGS) annual scientific meeting! The 2021 AGS event will take place virtually May 13-15 to connect knowledgeable and clever minds from across the country.
Two key NIA sessions
NIA is again excited to collaborate with the AGS Research Committee to present two symposia: one for early career researchers and their mentors, and the other for established researchers who have received at least one R01 or equivalent award.
I will open and moderate The ABCs of NIA Grantsmanship on Thursday, May 13, 1:15 - 2:15 p.m. ET. Ken Santora, Ph.D., director of NIA’s Division of Extramural Activities (DEA), will speak on “How to Get an NIA Grant,” and Andrew Cohen, M.D., DPhil, of Yale University, will discuss “Viewpoints from Junior Faculty Researchers.”
This first NIA session is tailored for investigators with current research training or career development awards, including T, F, or K funding; recipients of Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists' Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTARs); or anyone interested in getting a clearer picture of NIA-supported opportunities that can accelerate their research careers. We’ll aim to keep the presentations brief to maximize time for questions and answers: Please don’t miss this chance to connect!
Later that same day, from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. ET, I’ll commence and moderate the NIA Symposium for Researchers at Mid-Career and Beyond – Opportunities for Established Researchers. My remarks will include a brief overview of NIA’s budget and priority areas, and then several of my colleagues as noted below will present on NIA funding opportunities — including those for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research — and our future research priorities and plans:
- Evan Hadley, M.D., director, NIA Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology;
- Eliezer Masliah, M.D., director, NIA Division of Neuroscience;
- Lis Nielsen, Ph.D., director, NIA Division of Behavioral and Social Research; and
- Ken Santora, Ph.D., director, NIA DEA
This session is intended for independently funded researchers at mid-career and senior levels, including center directors, training directors, and established investigators. Presentations will be followed by opportunities for dialogue with NIA leadership.
