Translating a Dementia Caregiver Intervention Into a Mobile Application

Caring for a person with dementia is a highly stressful activity and can have a negative impact on physical and mental health. This study will develop and test a new mobile health application, the CARE-well App, for its potential to increase access to support and care for informal dementia caregivers.

Minimum Age Maximum Age Gender Healthy Volunteers

  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Provide at least four hours of care per day for a person with dementia, either directly or by telephone, for at least six months prior to study enrollment
  • Live in the community, either with the care recipient or without
  • No plans to place the person with dementia in long-term care or to end role as caregiver within six months of study enrollment
  • Report some degree of distress associated with caregiving
  • Access to internet at home

  • Major acute medical illness
  • Severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia
  • Diagnosis of a cognitive impairment

In this three-month study, investigators will conduct a trial to determine the usefulness of the CARE-well App. Each caregiver will be randomized to receive a computer tablet preloaded with the CARE-well App or preloaded with internet links relevant to dementia and caregiving. To measure sustainability of the App, the first 10 caregivers from each group will be offered the tablets for an additional month to monitor usage of the application outside the formal trial.
