Pragmatic Trial of Video Education in Nursing Homes (PROVEN)

What Is This Study About?

This study will test whether watching a video about advance care planning for nursing home residents makes a difference in hospitalizations, presence of advance directives, and hospice care compared with residents who follow the usual advance care planning procedures.

Do I Qualify To Participate in This Study?

Minimum Age: 65 Years

Maximum Age: N/A

Must have:

  • Resident of Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing home within Genesis HealthCare or PruittHealth systems
  • Facility serves both short- and long-stay patients and has more than 50 beds
  • Facility has electronic medical records system
  • Facility has at least 20 admissions and 20 annual Minimum Data Set assessments (regardless of whether residents were discharged alive)

Must NOT have:

  • Facilities with recent turnover in administrator or director of nursing
  • Facilities with recent bad state or federal quality assurance survey results (e.g. restriction on admissions, large civil monetary penalty)
  • Facilities with current new initiatives and/or competing demands
