Practice of Acceptance, Awareness, and Compassion in Caregiving (PAACC)

This study will evaluate the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based caregiver intervention that is designed to improve the caregiver's burden and the care recipient's quality of life. Care recipients have Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.

Caregivers:

  • Family member living with an individual diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's disease-related dementia, or traumatic brain injury with Alzheimer's disease
  • Moderate to severe caregiver burden

Care recipients:

  • Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's disease-related dementia, or traumatic brain injury with Alzheimer's disease

Caregivers:

  • Determined to be an imminent risk to self or others
  • Past-year active substance use disorder

Care recipients:

  • Residing in a nursing home or assisted living facility
  • Determined to be an imminent risk to self or others
  • Unable to give his or her own informed consent

Individuals who have a moderate to severe burden of caregiving for a person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, including dementia related to traumatic brain injury, will receive four sessions of the PAACC intervention, delivered by a trained facilitator every other week. Sessions will include education, problem solving, skill building, stress management, and mindfulness. Some participants will be randomly assigned to a comparative group that receives training in Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH), an established caregiver intervention based on cognitive behavior therapy.
