Managing Pain and Cognition in Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Memory Related Problems and Chronic Pain

What Is This Study About?

This study will compare two Active Brains mind-body programs for older adults with mild cognitive impairment and chronic pain. Researchers will randomly assign participants to each group and assess how each program helps improve coping with pain and cognitive function. In the first program, participants will use a Fitbit for recording physical activity. Each group meets weekly for eight sessions and receives specific instruction on how to use relaxation methods, stress and coping, and growth enhancement or participate in group sessions that uses lifestyle education. Researchers will assess the group changes in physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning.

Do I Qualify To Participate in This Study?

Minimum Age: 60 Years

Maximum Age: N/A

Must have:

  • Nonmalignant chronic pain for three months or more
  • MCI or subjective memory-related problems
  • Able to perform a 6-minute walk test at an accelerated pace
  • Own a smartphone with Bluetooth 4.0
  • Free of psychotropic or pain medication for at least two weeks prior to study treatment or stable on medications for at least six weeks
  • Cleared by a medical doctor for study participation
  • Lead a sedentary lifestyle

Must NOT have:

  • Diagnosed with medical illness expected to worsen in the next six months
  • Serious mental illness or instability for which hospitalization may be likely in the next six months
  • Current suicidal ideation
  • Lifetime history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other psychotic disorder, or substance dependence
  • Substance use disorder within past six months
  • Practice of yoga/meditation or other mind-body techniques for relaxation once weekly or more for 45 minutes or more within the last three months
  • Regular use of Fitbit in the last three months
  • Engagement in regular intensive physical exercise for more than 30 minutes daily
  • Unable to walk without assistance device (e.g., wheelchair, walker)
