Psychotherapy to Promote Social Connection in Caregivers

What Is This Study About?

Social Engage psychotherapy is designed to increase caregiver motivation for social engagement, teach problem-solving skills, and develop action plans to increase social engagement. This study will determine if Social Engage psychotherapy can help address barriers to social connection to reduce loneliness and stress in dementia caregivers. Participants will attend eight individual psychotherapy sessions, lasting one hour or less, within three months. All sessions will be done remotely, by phone, from the participant's home.

Do I Qualify To Participate in This Study?

Minimum Age: 50 Years

Maximum Age: N/A

Must have:

  • Primary language is English
  • Caregiver for a family member with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia who lives with or nearby the family member with dementia
  • Evidence of caregiver distress with a 10-item Perceived Stress Scale score of 11 or higher and/or Modified Caregiver Strain Index score of 5 or higher
  • Evidence of significant loneliness with a UCLA Loneliness Scale score above 6

Must NOT have:

  • Recent or current psychosis
  • Significant cognitive impairment
  • Hearing problems that would interfere with the study
