Social Dancing Movement Intervention for Memory Enhancement (MIME)

What Is This Study About?

This pilot study will test social dancing as a method to prevent or delay cognitive decline in older adults at high risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Do I Qualify To Participate in This Study?

Minimum Age: 65 Years

Maximum Age: N/A

Must have:

  • A score of 6 on the Memory Impairment Screen or 1 on the AD-8
  • Plan to live in the area for next year or more
  • English speaking
  • Willing to complete a functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

Must NOT have:

  • Diagnosis of dementia (previously or at initial visit)
  • Serious chronic or acute illness such as cancer (late-stage, metastatic, or on active treatment), chronic pulmonary disease on ventilator or continuous oxygen therapy, or active liver disease
  • Mobility limitations due to musculoskeletal or cardiovascular conditions that prevent dancing
  • Any medical condition or chronic medication use that will compromise safety or affect cognitive functioning (e.g., antipsychotics)
  • Terminal illness with life expectancy less than a year
  • Presence of progressive, degenerative neurologic disease (e.g., Parkinson's disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
  • Severe auditory or visual loss
  • Active psychoses or psychiatric symptoms (such as agitation) noted during the clinic visit that will prevent study completion
  • Participation in competitive or recreational dancing more than once a month for the past 6 months
  • Participation in another interventional study that overlaps with this study
