As a Scientific Review Officer in NIA’s Scientific Review Branch, Dr. Ferrell is responsible for organizing peer review meetings across NIA’s research areas. She is the SRO for the Behavior and Social Science of Aging Standing Review Committee (NIA-S) and also runs program project (P01) and request for application (RFA) reviews. She has been active on several trans-NIH committees and is the co-lead of the NIA Green Team.
Dr. Ferrell is a biological anthropologist with expertise in skeletal aging, dental microstructure and development, demography, and reproductive aging. Her overarching research interests include the reconstruction of health and mortality patterns in past human populations and evolutionary adaptations in humans.
Before coming to NIA in March, 2009, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Howard University, where she taught courses in biological and cultural anthropology and conducted research in dental anthropology funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Prior to that, she was a postdoctoral fellow in reproductive aging at Georgetown University’s Center for Population and Health where she studied reproductive endocrine changes across the menopausal transition and the evolution of menopause. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from the College of William and Mary, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from the Pennsylvania State University.
