After Application

Will I really lose my R00 funding if I cannot get a faculty appointment before the end of my K99? What is the policy?

A K99 awardee can ask for a no-cost extension on the K99 for an additional year. If the awardee does not secure a job within the year of the no-cost extension, then this third year represents the terminal year for the K99.

I am in the first/second/third year of an internal CTSA funded KL2 grant. Can I apply for a full 5-year K award from the NIA? I have heard that different NIH Institutes have different rules about how much total K award support someone can have.

The KL2 or K12 award is a career development award provided to individuals by an institution that has a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) or K12 award from the NIH. KL2 awardees can and do compete for NIH K awards. The NIH does not restrict the number of K years in aggregate that an individual can have. However for most institutes, including the NIA, individual mentored K award support totals no more than 7 years in most circumstances. KL2 and K12 awardees can apply for a minimum of 3 years and perhaps up to 5 years of additional K support.

I submitted an R03/R21/F31 application requesting NIA assignment and NIA turned down the assignment of my application. Why does NIA not see my application as relevant to aging?

We know that a lot of applications are relevant to aging. Many applications accepted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the National Institute on Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and other Institutes are relevant to aging. But, most of these applications cannot be assigned as primary to NIA.

Robin Barr is listed as the program officer for my application. I know Robin Barr and he is Director of the Division of Extramural Activities at NIA. Who is my REAL program officer?

As soon as an application is assigned to an Institute, the NIH electronic system assigns a default program administrator to it to ensure that an applicant has an immediate contact at the Institute. NIA’s default contact is the Director of the Division of Extramural Activities, Dr. Robin Barr. After NIA program coding is complete – usually about 4 weeks after assignment – your particular program administrator will be assigned.
