This trial will determine the effect of a 12-minute educational video for professional caregivers describing three levels of care for advanced dementia—intensive, basic, and comfort. A total of 360 nursing home residents with advanced dementia in 20 nursing homes will be recruited. Ten nursing homes will test the video intervention; the other 10 will perform the usual care. Each resident will have a knowledgeable family member or friend who will be interviewed. Outcomes, including decisions about hospitalization and levels of care, will be compared.
