From the annual Summer Institute on Aging Research to the Women of Color Research Network, NIA and NIH initiatives are helping to encourage diversity in the biomedical research workforce. Recent activities include new funding opportunities and a new position to lead NIH’s effort to diversify the biomedical research workforce.
A workshop co-hosted by NIA offered a forum for participants to learn about health initiatives and programs for American Indian/Alaska Native elders, discuss elders’ public health needs, identify strategies for effective health communication, and enhance collaboration.
The inability to afford nutritious food is a serious problem facing some underserved communities. Recent findings from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study shed light on the ways in which food insecurity can influence health, specifically hypertension.
