In December 2011, J Taylor Harden, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., retired from Federal service. During Dr. Harden’s nearly 15-year tenure as Assistant to the Director for Special Populations at NIA, she helped transform minority aging research across the Institute. She credits her many mentors and reflects on highlights of her career.
NIA is partnering with two Maryland high schools, Wheaton High School in the D.C. metro area and Patterson High School in Baltimore City, to teach students the importance and fun of having a career in biomedical science. Economic, psychosocial, behavioral, health-related, and insurance-related factors may play a role in racial differences in mortality among older people, according to a study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The findings suggest that risk factors go beyond traditional measures of socioeconomic status.
Sidney Stahl, Ph.D., who led the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMARs) since their inception 15 years ago, retired from NIA at the end of March. Dr. Stahl looks back at his work at NIA and shares what’s next for him.
Researchers at the Michigan Center on Urban African American Aging Research report that working with community leaders is a promising strategy for building a research volunteer registry of older African Americans in the Detroit area.
